HEAVEN

I think we have an idea what Melissa is enjoying in heaven…we had a piece of it on our recent vacation.  We went on our first cruise with one of Donny’s fraternity brothers and his wife (Curt  “Mange” and Mary Clifford).  Haven’t
Seen them but once a year at Homecoming at Wilmington…until last year.
Their daughter, Courtney, died of ovarian cancer a year ago February.  She was 27.  Too young too.  We have a lot in common.
Actually, our daughters had a lot in common too.  Both very outgoing, athletic, energetic and competitive.  Always played (or fought) to win.
They were GREAT travelling companions (I hope they felt the same way about us!)

The cruise was to the Carribbean – Grand Turk Island (Turks & Caicos), Half Moon Cay (private island owned by Carnival Cruise lines) and Nassau.

My favorite – Half Moon Cay.  I am not an ocean swimmer.  I’m an ocean wader.  Ankle deep.  Don’t like swimming where there are fish bigger than me that might want me for lunch. At Half Moon Cay, I felt like I was swimming in a POOL!  The water was beautiful.  Did a little snorkeling there too.  We were in the water with Mange and Mary and I said “I think we have
An idea what Melissa and Courtney get in heaven.  Only they get it EVERY day.  Forever.

I can honestly say that this was the first time in three years that I didn’t think of anything for an entire week.  We had fun every day.  Seven days.
It CAN happen.  And the nice thing?  We could talk about our daughters
As much as we wanted.  And we did.  But we got to know EACH OTHER too.

Funny story.  What we found out was Mary and Donny are a lot alike.  Both organizers.  Both keep very busy all the time.  The first morning at breakfast in the dining room, Donny & Mary BOTH brought the itinerary for the day (they put an itinerary for the day under your cabin door every morning).  As they were reading over the itinerary, they both got excited about a meeting in the Paladium (theatre) at 9:45 – it was all about all the activities for the day.  They thought we really needed to go to the meeting…
Mange said “I’d rather go to the bar”.  I said “I’d rather go to the casino.”
So it was decided that Donny and Mary would go to the meeting and plan our day.  As we were returning to our rooms, Mary turned around and said
“What time did you want to meet me in the shower?”  Needless to say, we all stopped in our tracks, looked at Mary with our mouthes dropping – What the…?????  And laughed until our stomachs hurt.  One of those “why did I say that” moments.
It was a great start to a great week.  And it got better every day.

I can honestly say that I didn’t think that a week like that would ever happen again.
What I know is that while I will never stop missing Melissa, EVER, and the pain of not having her here will never go away, I know that there will be good days woven into the bad days.  Sometimes bad moments woven into good moments.

The timing of this vacation was perfect.  With the approach of fall, which Melissa LOVED LOVED LOVED, I have a little ache in my heart when the leaves start changing.  It’s painful knowing that we will never share the beauty of a fall day again in my lifetime.  Rugby matches, football games, Halloween.  Fall walks.  I love the fall too…but with the arrival of fall, the holidays are not far behind.  I’m pretty sure that Nov/Dec/Jan will never be the same for me.  Donny and I will celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with Nick, Mere and the boys in some way…because we are making memories for our grandsons.  And I want them to be happy memories.  But those three months bring back some very painful memories.  No matter how hard you try,
Every day, really beginning with October 19, JP’s birthday, brings back a memory.  Flashbacks.  So I do as much as I can do, but it isn’t much.
I’m thinking about maybe doing Christmas cards this year…but even thinking about it is hard.  Really.  Will just have to wait and see how I’m feeling then.

On the Compassionate Friends page on Facebook, they posted a comment from a newly bereaved mom.  She is wondering if she will ever “get better”.  Over 200 responses from people who have lost a child or children…and one really hit home with me.  Her daughter died 28 years ago.  She said “in the beginning I had a hard time just getting out of bed…after a while, I realized that all I had to do was deal with each day, one day at a time.  I couldn’t face a lifetime without her”….wow.  That is exactly how I feel… I can’t face a lifetime without her…so I will take ONE DAY at a TIME.  And get through each day the best I can (until I see her again!)…that doesn’t make a lifetime seem so overwhelming…sometimes I might even get through more than ONE day.  A little slice of heaven is good for the soul…especially when  a piece of your heart is missing…

And HERE is a little slice of heaven…

                             After dinner drinks...lemoncello...yum!
                               Heaven...on the beach
          Disembarking...onto Grand Turk Island
My masseuse, Megan, who I found out lived in Centerville (a few miles from Kettering!)
Nope, this is not a pool...the beach at Half Moon Cay.  Heaven.
Mange and Mary with our waiter Oneisimo (from Honduras)
In the disco for 1972 night (the 3 1972 graduates)...we were the only ones there...funny!
Even had a library on the ship....heaven for a librarian!
Enjoying Ft. Lauderdale before heading home...
Donny and our "former" neighbor Mike (his mom and dad are still our neighbors.

Now the Marriott on Ft. Lauderdale beach.  Formerly...I can't remember. But it is the same hotel we stayed in with the kids in the summer of 1982.  Donny worked for NCR at the time and had to go to Ft. Lauderdale on business.  Instead of flying, he decided that he would take all of us and we would drive to Florida.  He had never been there, and was VERY excited to see the ocean for the first time.  At the time, we had a Fairmont station wagon. Silver woody wagon (if you are as old as we are, you know what a woody wagon is)...NO air conditioning.  in the 60s and 70s, not all cars had AC.
Melissa was around 3 1/2, Nick was probably 18 mos then.  No car seats either.
So we are driving to Florida, and Donny decides that we can drive straight through.  He wants to GET THERE.  Fort Lauderdale.  That is a 19-23 hour drive straight through.
With a 3 year old and a 1 year old....When I took over the driving, I told him we WERE stopping to spend the night some where.  The kids needed to sleep AND needed baths.
So we stopped at the King Frog Hotel in Georgia.  I think you can still find it on I-75. We got there around midnight, Donny called for a wake up call at 4 am.  Really.  He wanted to get back on the road ASAP.  So the kids got a bath, and about 4 hours of sleep.  Good enough for Donny.  Of course we couldn't stop for breakfast because we had donuts in the car, they could eat those.  About the time we got on the Florida turnpike, Nick started looking a little green.  He was sitting on my lap, cuddling and gurgling....and he threw up.  All over me.  All of our luggage was packed on top of the car.  All I had IN the car was an extra pair of jeans.  Long jeans.  And we were headed for Ft. Lauderdale...in JULY.  We pulled off the road, I changed clothes on the side of the road, put the puked on clothes in a bag and put on jeans. With no AC in the car...
No one was happier to get to the hotel in Ft. Laud than ME.
We had an awesome room with a view of the ocean.  Donny was working every day, I was at the pool every day with the kids.   With two adorable towheads, I had no trouble making friends at the pool... two couples - one from Pittsburg, one couple from England, AND the pool boy who sold suntan lotion by the pool.  Heaven.  During that week, the aircraft carrier INDEPENDENCE was in port in Ft. Lauderdale.  It was anchored about 3 miles out on the beach.  The two couples I met invited me and kids to go out and tour the aircraft carrier.  All we needed was a sailor to give us a pass, which we had no problem finding.  They thought we could get there on a helicopter, which would have been awesome, but instead we went over on a Liberty boat.  Standing only.
With a one year old and a three year old.  But I did have four people to help me.  It was incredible.  Unfortunately Melissa and Nick were too young to remember, except for the photos I took.  I remember though.
That trip ended up being a TWO week vacation because Donny had to work there an extra week.  A great vacation for a family with no money to take their kids on a vacation!
The kids remember I KNOW because we talked about this vacation so much when they were little.  The vacation they remember was our 3 1/2 week trip out west.  Driving.
But that's ANOTHER post.

And of course, a little Drew and Max are good for the soul too....

                                        Andrew
                            Max

Retirement begins next Monday.  Teachers go back the 13th.  I will go to the breakfast,
they will go to their buildings after breakfast...I will do whatever I feel like doing...for the first time in 26 years.  It feels good.

If you have kids going back to school, remember that those kids (1, 2, 3 or however many are driving you crazy at the end of the summer) are going back to a classroom with 20-25 (or more) kids...just like YOUR kids.  You had a couple to deal with, teachers have 10 times that...remember that when you think teachers have a cushy job.

OH...and one more thing.  I was on the softball team again this year.  Only played if we didn't have enough players...our team will never forfeit a game because we don't have enough players!
They did need me last week, so I played.  First base.  (When you are married to the coach, you get to play any position you want.  First base is the only position I can play).
So fast forward to the bottom of the sixth.  We are ahead, 8-0.  I get my first hit of the game (I was 1 for 3).  Two batters later, I am on third base.  Donny is coaching first base. Two outs.
Here is how Donny coaches ME at third base.  "You really look good.  You have nice legs.  etc etc"...he forgets to tell me that I can't step on home plate.
So I don't just STEP on home plate when the next girl up gets a GREAT hit...I JUMP on home plate with BOTH feet.  The umpire yells "OUT".  Donny looks at him and yells "WHO IS OUT??? They didn't even make the play at first!"  He looks at Donny (we know the umpire) and he says "Pam is out.  She stepped on home plate."
Fortunately the team we were playing did not have a good last inning, and we won the game.  Actually, won the league.  And if we win again next Tuesday, we win the tournament too...no thanks to me.... (but I AM still playing at 56...something to be said for THAT)...

And enjoy the fall.

I'll be back.....

(Love you and miss you EVERY day Melissa....)

Sad day...

I am sitting here watching the news this morning and feeling so very sad for the families in Aurora, Colorado.  My heart goes out to the parents, friends and families of those that were killed...new members to the "club that no one wants to belong to..."

This has not been one of my better weeks.  Over the last three years, I have figured out that I DON'T know when these days will happen.  I just know that they sneak up on you, and suddenly you are in this funk.  I also know that it will gradually fade, but will never completely go away.

Normally, I post things like this in my journal.   I have had trouble sleeping the last couple of weeks, and last night I just decided it was time to post how I was feeling on the blog.  Melissa was almost always upbeat, which at the end, had everyone believing things were much better than they were.
That was Melissa.  I wish I could live my life like she did.  Even after three years, believe it or not,
it is really hard to motivate myself to do anything.  I just don't have the energy anymore.  I don't know how she did it...maybe it was youth.  The fact that she knew she had so much more to give...she had to keep going.  I loved that she lived her life that way...she pretty much did whatever she wanted to do those last couple of years (one particular incident comes to mind...she had just had her mastectomy and came home with two drains that she had to empty each day.  Two open wounds.  The rugby team was going "cabrewing" and she was NOT going to miss it.  I pleaded with her not to go..."MELISSA.  You have open wounds...if you fall in the river, in that filthy water...that would NOT be good..."
"Ok mom.  I won't go."  So I tried to call her several times that day, kind of forgot that it was the cabrewing day.  That night, when I finally reached her, I asked where she was all day.  "OK mom, I can't lie...I went cabrewing today... but it was OK...I didn't get in the water at all...I had it all taped up with plastic...I'm fine...REALLY."
When I look back, I am so glad she did those things.  I know there were others, just don't come to mind right now.
I guess the reason I am bringing this up is because I feel like I should be doing the same thing.  I WANT to be like Melissa.  But it's really hard.  Just thinking about doing some things makes me anxious.  So I am better off just doing the things that I feel comfortable doing.  I DO like going out with friends for lunch, dinner, coffee.  I am not a big phone talker.  I DO like talking about Melissa.  I DO like showing pictures of Drew and Max.  And I don't know where I would be without Donny.   (the puzzle is going off...I think Melissa is ok with this post...) And Nick.

Believe it or not, I WANT my old life back.  I want to be the social person, the planner, the happy person that I used to be.  Problem is, my old life includes my daughter.  I don't particularly like this new life I am living.  Not sure if I will ever get used to it.  But it doesn't mean I won't enjoy the blessings in my life...Donny, Nick & Mere, Drew & Max, Sue, my dad, Melissa's friends who stay in touch on a regular basis, my new friends who are living the life we are living now, and old friends, who might not "get it", but still call and don't try to "fix" me.  I can't be fixed.  I am a new person.  I guess it would be like getting a new friend.  If you don't like something about someone, you don't have to be their friend.  So if you don't like something about the "new" me, I am really ok with that.  Just like you, I need to surround myself with people that will let me be the new person that I am, because the old Pam had a daughter.  This one doesn't.

Please understand that I do not want your sympathy.  I just want understanding.  (I know two years ago I asked for patience...I didn't realize at the time that grieving a child is a never ending process...sorry). I feel blessed that I have family and friends in my life who accept the new me.

Whew.  I feel better already.  (just read this to Donny to see if it was ok...didn't shed a tear as I was writing it, but cried the whole time I was reading it out loud...writing is SO good for me...I think it was good for Fort too!)

Have a good day.  I know mine will be a little better now...

Poop Fairy

I miss you EVERY single day Melissa...and double on days when Drew and Max do and say things that I know you would find amusing...amusing enough to post.  That was this weekend.  Andrew made you smile and laugh when he was just eight months old...and he has never stopped making us laugh.  I wish you could have known Max, and Max could have met YOU.  Oh...he KNOWS you.  I just wish he could have heard your laugh...somewhere we have videos and he WILL hear your voice and your laugh...until then, I imagine your laughter when I would share stories like this with you...

This weekend, we met Nick, Mere and the boys at Wilson Park to go swimming.  Of course when we were packing up to leave, Drew was BEGGING to spend the night with Pamma (Nick & Mere just HAPPENDED to have a packed bag for the boys in the van - just in case).  Of COURSE I couldn't say NO.  Saturday, as most of you know was hotter than H*LL.  When we got home, they SHOULD have been sleepy after being in the pool and the hot sun for a couple of hours...but no.  They wanted to dig in the back yard.  Just too hot, so they had to find something to do inside.  Within 15 minutes or so, Drew came upstairs asking if he could use Poppop's tape.  "Why do you need Poppop's tape?"
"I'm making something for Aunt Fort"....He brings me a business card that he found downstairs (from Hidy Honda) and two small plastic anchors (that you use to anchor screws in the wall).  He wanted to tape the anchors onto the card.  He had written (scribbled) something on the card and I asked him what it said.  "I love you" (to Aunt Fort)...then I asked him how he was going to get it to her.
"In a balloon.  We'll put it in then blow up the balloon".  Then he said "Does Aunt Fort have a car?  She can buy one!" (because it was a "car" card!)  I KNOW she was smiling.

Earlier, when we had just gotten home from the pool, Max had a poopy diaper.  I changed it. About 15 minutes later, he had ANOTHER poopy diaper.  About half an hour later, he wasn't around and I said "Max. Where are you?  What are you doing?"  He said "Pooping."  I found him, picked him up and said "NO YOU AREN'T"...and took him to the bathroom, took the diaper off, sat him on the toilet, and said "NOW you can poop."  In the meantime, Donny and Andrew followed us into the bathroom - we were all waiting for something to happen.  Max was crying..."Pamma.  I don't know HOW to do it.  I am only TWO (holding up two fingers)...I'm just a baby!"  And out of NOWHERE, I said "Max.  The Poop Fairy is right outside the window.  If you poop in the toilet, he'll bring you something.  ANYTHING you want. "  Right away, Andrew says "Pamma, can I see him????"  So we opened the window, and I said "he must be invisible"....which satisfied Drew.  Now Max is sitting there, with a confused look on his face, but STILL sitting on the toilet.  "Pamma, where is he?  Can I see him?  What does he have?"  I told him he had to poop in the toilet before he would get something.  At this point, I sent Donny and Drew OUT of the bathroom, got a book to read to Max while he was sitting (really TRYING to poop)...and read GO DOG GO (should have been GO MAX GO...huh?).
Well, he must have grunted for 5 minutes, and nothing was happening, so I let him get down, and told him that if he goes at home, to call me and give me his list so I can get it to the Poop Fairy.
Sounds like a kid's book, doesn't it???  That's my NEXT project.  (After getting the BLOG published).

I have an idea for a book about teachers too.  Plus every room in my house is going to get a little
renovation.

(And, OH. By the way...Max will be 3 August 20. So even though he IS the BABY of the family...we are ready to get him potty trained...his mom and dad too!)
Why did I wait so long to retire?

And for some reason...I've been a little down for the last  couple of days.  Thinking a lot about Melissa and missing her.  Some days are like that.  The nice thing now is I can spend a day thinking about her, not get out of bed if I don't feel like it...because those days aren't EVERY day any more.  But they still happen...when I least expect it.  So the last couple of days have been pretty laid back.
I made a slideshow of Melissa (and one of Drew & Max too!)  WITH music.  I can watch whenever I'm missing her. Makes me cry...but makes me smile too.  I was such a lucky mom to have a daughter like Melissa....not just my daughter, but my best friend too.

She would expect me to end with photos of Drew and Max, and of course I have plenty. But will just share a few....

Max & Pamma at Grandpa Irv's
                                       Drew, Pamma, Grandpa Irv
Max looks up to his big brother...literally...
                                       Aunt Fort's present
and she can buy a car too!!!

OH.....one more thing....Angie stopped by yesterday.  We are in the process of getting a
date for another FIREBIRDS for FORT Fundraiser.  Just like the first one.  If you are interested
in helping out OR donating something, let one of us know!!!  The tentative date is Saturday,
October 6 (if the Union Hall is available that day!)

Enjoy the cooler weather - finally.

I did it.....

RETIRED.....
Fort would be happy.  I know...because it would mean I could spend more time visiting HER.  She loved my lunch visits (maybe it had something to do with me paying for lunch?)...I know Nick is pretty happy about it too ~ more time to help out with the kids - which I love.  And Donny?  Well, not as excited as the kids, only because HE would love to retire too.  He only has a few more years, and by the time he retires, the house will be paid off.  Believe it or not, I look forward to when he is retired too so we can do some travelling.

Until then, I have LOTS of odd jobs to do around the house.  I've become, what I call, an "organized hoarder".  In the last three years not a lot has been done around the house (actually, the last 9 years).
Every time things started getting cluttered, I'd buy baskets.  Organize stuff in baskets.  The first week out of retirement I went through all those baskets.  What in the world was I thinking????  I don't know why I saved any of the stuff.  Mostly now I only keep Melissa things.  So I got started on that.
Then I decided to redo the downstairs bathroom.  You know, just pull down that wallpaper and paint...HA!  I don't know about you, but taking down wallpaper is NOT a one day project.  Turns out I needed to spackle, sand and clean up the dust  from the sanding before I could even open a can of paint....and that's where I am today.

But I'm getting a little ahead of myself here...thought I'd reflect a little on my work history.  Pretty interesting really (to me anyway)...of course like every other girl, my first job was babysitting, seventh grade (for one of my teacher's kids!). That was 1968.  In 1972, I had a Journal Herald paper route (long enough to get through "NewsBOYS" day - girls weren't permitted to have paper routes back then, I shared a route with my brother and it was in HIS name!).  After that, got a job at Clancy's as a short order cook (which is really funny - since I am probably the worst cook ever!) Donny was the bartender same time I was working in the kitchen!
After graduation, got my first "real" job - full time Personnel Secretary at Goodwill Industries.  Starting salary - $90/wk.  I was living in an apartment with a girlfriend from high school-Jerri.
Our rent was $165 month.  Not much left over for food/utilities, and I didn't have a car - Donny was driving the car I bought back and forth to Wilmington!
Took the state Civil Service exam, had the highest score so I had to take the first job offered - at the Welfare Dept.  NOT my favorite job.  Transferred to Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation as soon as a position opened.  Before I transferred, got married June 26, 1976.
LOVED my job at BVR, but left December 1977, a few weeks before Melissa was born (1/5/78).
Went back to BVR in August of 78...needed the money.  Paid a sitter $25/week to come to the house.
She would call me every day "OH-Melissa took a step today." or "OH - Melissa said ..." I hated it.
Nine months later I was pregnant with Nick and decided to be a stay at home mom.  BEST decision I ever made.  I LOVED staying home with the kids.
Before I went to work for Kettering schools in 1985 - had LOTS of part time jobs.
Elder Beerman, Lesko Photography, U.D. Arena, and lots of odd jobs with Crown Temporary Services.
When Nick started first grade, I started part time at Greenmont Elementary.  Was there for 5 years.
Then one year at Oakview as a classroom aide.
In 1991, Rusty Clifford (the new Principal at Moraine Meadows, now Superintendant of W.Carrollton Schools!) hired me, Jackie Geary and Josh Stucky on the same day.  We ended up working together for 20 years.  I loved EVERY minute at Moraine Meadows.  I was the Librarian, Writing to Read Coordinator, Intramurals Director, Volunteer Coordinator, picture taker, Reading Incentive Program coordinator...you name it. I couldn't say NO to anything.  And I loved it.
Went through 5 GREAT Principals at MM.
I really thing Melissa and Nick LOVED the fact that I worked in the school system.  I was home when they were home for holidays, Spring Break and all summer.  We had a lot of fun when they were kids...I had a lot of fun when they were kids!  I had the best of both worlds for sure.

Then, in 2010, the dream ended.  The handwriting was on the wall...there had been talk for many years that Moraine Meadows was just too small and would eventually be closed.  As long as the district was raking in MILLIONS of dollars from the GM plant, we did stay open.  As soon as GM closed, they closed us.  VERY SAD day for me and the entire staff at MM.  We were all moved to schools across the district.  I chose to go back to Greenmont, where I started 20 years previously.
Nothing against Greenmont, but it just wasn't the same.  I had planned on retiring with Jackie from
MM.  Now, Jackie was fighting cancer, she was in a different building, Melissa was gone, all my friends from MM were in different buildings...my heart just wasn't in it any more.

I always knew when I felt that way it would be time to go.  They need someone who had the enthusiasm that I once had...so after 26 years with Kettering Schools (plus 3 years from BVR) I was able to retire with 29 years....and here I am.  BUSIER than ever in my first few weeks of
retirement.
In the last month I've been on a vacation to Saugatuck, MI with MM friends, torn apart a bathroom,
gone through multiple baskets of who knows what (and made the house a TON lighter taking stuff to Goodwill), reconnected with friends from BVR, celebrated our 36th anniversary and watched the kids at least a couple of days a week.

BUSY is good, or so I'm told.  I did have a few minutes of "idle" time last week. Of course, thought of Melissa ~ missing her terribly...and what do you know?  VIVA LA VIDA came on the radio.  Haven't heard it in a  long time.  But I needed to know she was around, and she came through.

Donny has been blessed with a couple of Melissa dreams (we call them "visits").  When I was in Michigan, he had a dream (visit) I was in it too - it was the three of us.  He said he KNEW it was a visit, and he wanted to ask her some things.  He asked her if it was hard to do "this" (visit).  She said "YES".  He asked her to blow in his face.  She did.  He said "NO. Not now, later" (like when he woke up) She just laughed.  He also asked her what heaven was like.  She said "It's impossible to tell".
Must be REALLY beautiful.  He said at the end of the dream, they were cheek to cheek, and he woke up - he cheek was warm - like she was there.
I'm still hoping for a visit.  Hasn't happened yet...

There are good things in my life.  Nick and Mere are in their new home, happy.  Drew and Max are healthy and happy little boys.  Drew starts preschool in the fall already.

I stay in touch with Melissa's friends - most often with Angie (who has some exciting news herself!)
All good things.

But not a DAY goes by that I don't think of Melissa.  In fact, despite what someone told me once (that eventually she wouldn't be the first thing I thought of when I got up in the morning)...she IS the first thing I think about every morning.  Might be the message she left me on my dresser mirror many years ago - I'll always be grateful for THAT.) And I miss her EVERY single day.  Always will.
You NEVER "get over" losing a child.  You just get through each day the best you can. One day at a time.

I am thankful for a loving husband, a healthy son, a wonderful daughter in law, two happy grandsons and caring friends.

And I know what Melissa LOVED to end with (she would probably be a little upset with this long post...sorry Fort)....
so without further ado...a few pics of the BUSY "ness" that was June....

                                           Last day at Greenmont
                                        Me and Caleb Fortener-yep. Related.
                                           Me, Angie, butterflies...

My "Retirement" party - Thanks MM friends!

Dad and Donny's birthday

Rugby - Old Girls Game - had a display
with lots of pictures - here's one of Fort.
They retired her jersey and gave it to us too.
I love those girls.

Father's Day - me and my dad.

Moraine Meadows friends in Saugatuck, Mi.

Butterfly horse- Carousel in St. Joseph, MI.

                                    Dune ride group shot.

And of course a post would not be complete without a
pic of Andrew and Max.

We have a small pool in the backyard, and they
aren't much into wearing bathing suits. And well,
when ya gotta go, ya gotta go....

...got paint on my hands (primer).  It's dry now, so the painting
begins!  The bathroom should be finished soon.  Fort wanted
me to paint this bathroom green (for some reason, I remember
that - so Fort...it's green (a shade of green)...for YOU.
(If it looks good, I'll post pictures...)

Enjoy the summer.

Mother's Day

Not an easy day...although Nick, Mere and the boys made me smile...on Saturday.  They have been very accommodating when it comes to holidays.   They really went overboard this year - I got a beautiful Willowtree statue (that I have begun to collect), it's a mom (grandma)and two little boys,
two butterflies for the gardens and a beautiful wall hanging with a letter to "mom"...PLUS a cashmere sweater (with a breast cancer ribbon) from Mere's mom.  Overboard...but SO nice.
(Thanks Nick & Mere, Drew & Max!)
Sunday, off to the boat for some mindless activity...a good way "around" another holiday.
Donny and I took a good friend from Compassionate Friends.  (She is not a gambler, but needed to
get away too.  She accidently put $5 in a $5 slot maching - and won $100.  I told her it was her Mother's Day present from her son!  She liked that...)
My beautiful daughter in law, Mere, with a rose from her LOVING
husband (from grandma's roses)

Not a rose bush, a rose TREE.  At least 25 roses
on this thing!

That's Why I'm Here.....
A couple of weeks ago, Donny and I were at Books and Co., saw that Chris Spielman (former Ohio State football player, also played for the Lions and Buffalo, is now an ESPN Sports Analyst) was going to be there signing his book That's Why I'm Here.  He lost his wife Stefanie to breast cancer about 6 months after Melissa passed away.  He started a foundation in her name to raise money for research.  The story he tells is very similar to Melissa's story.  His wife was diagnosed at 30, fought it for 12 years.  I was very impressed with the work his foundation is doing.  He only spoke for about 10 minutes, then started the book signing.  He listened intently to each person that came through the line (I think 75 #s were given out)...and took pictures of survivors to put on his FB page, also pictures with anyone else that wanted one.  The book REinspired me to get started on MELISSA'S book... plan on starting on it this summer.

ANOTHER butterfly.....!

My students KNOW how much I love butterflies...and I literally have recieved over 100 butterflies in the last two years!
This one was from a fifth grader.  Saw it at the store and his mom said "if you want to spend your money on this..."
and he said "YEP".   Wow.

RUGBY

CINCY vs. DAYTON

A beautiful day for a rugby match...and OH how I miss seeing Melissa out there...but how I LOVE seeing her friends...they are so good to us....(plus they are a little more patient explaining rugby to me than Melissa was...I guess she thought I should understand the game after explaining it to me for TEN years....I'm getting a little better.  I think.

Ok...I think this is called a "line out"...am I right?
Notice the green shirt - that's Coach Curt.  On the shirt
it says  "15 years of history - a lifetime of memories"
At the top of the rugby ball, it says FORT, then the
names of two other players who have passed, and LOTS
of rugby memories.  Now my favorite rugby shirt.

(Until the "OLD GIRLS play - May 26 in Dayton - that shirt
is AWESOME.  Fort would LOVE it.  Will post a picture
when I get one!)

Jen "Smitty" (former rugby coach and friend),
Tammy, former teammate and friend.
Now MY friends.

Will post information about the upcoming OLD GIRLS and OLD BOYS matches
soon.  If you've never seen a rugby match, this would be a good day to watch.
Should be interesting....

DREW and MAX

Fort seemed to always end with something cute about Drew.  Whenever I have something to share, I try to do that too.  When we got home from the Awards Ceremony tonight, we had a message on the answering machine.  It was Max (with Mere in the background) telling us that he pooped in the big boy toilet.  He was SO excited.  Mere was telling Drew to say "HI Pamma and PopPop" he said it, then he said "THEY'RE NOT TALKING TO ME"...just doesn't understand "leaving a message" I guess!  But it reminded me of when the kids were little, we had one of them (can't remember which one) call Grandma to wish her a happy birthday.  We put them on the phone, said "Say Happy Birthday".  So they said Happy Birthday.  Then they said "it's still ringing"....
Oh well.  I wish I would have written down EVERYTHING they said.  My advice to you -
get a journal when they're little AND WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN.  You WILL forget.
I'm writing down everything Drew and Max say now...they'll be sorry.

Ten days.

Doolittles Raiders celebrated the 70th Anniversary @ WPAFB.
The planes from Doolittles Raiders flew over the city that day -
RIGHT OVER my school!

Looking at all the exciting things that have been happening in the last month,  you might find this hard to believe...but the last couple of weeks have been really hard.  I guess I'll call it "April showers"...in my own little world.  "Showers" in the form of tears.  Don't always know what sets them off...I'm guessing Easter.  And coming up, Mother's Day....and finding things like the stickers above that she had in her scrapbook bag that I decided to look through.
I like to think that I KNOW why she bought these (I do - they were for Drew's scrapbook that she never got to finish. She took it to the hospital to work on, never had the energy to get to it - although she had everything she needed at her fingertips if she ever had the energy to do it)
I can see her shopping at the scrapbook store and seeing these...

HOMEMADE...
GRATITUDE...
WHERE YOU LIVE...
Warm place...
do it yourself (THAT Is probably the sticker that made her buy this!)..
down in the dumps...
family vacation...
joy...
CARE...
Happy Home...
Mother knows best...
Good Values...
sunshine...
protective...
good things...
TOGETHER...
Parent...
balancing act...
Calm...
comfort...
Life...
loved...
mom...
enjoy the party...
Remember.
all of these things are Melissa. I'm pretty sure she had a picture in mind for every sticker.
I miss her so much...every single day....
Don't sweat the small stuff...hug your kids and tell them you love them
EVERY day.

Happy Birthday Andrew - 4/4 he's 4!

Four years ago today...our second grandson arrived...ANDREW CHARLES. Our family was growing. And he came when we needed him. He got to meet his Aunt Fort and spend lots of time with her. I hope he remembers her. Nick, Mere, Donny and I ALL talk about Aunt Fort to Drew and Max.
Last few days, Andrew was about the reason Melissa would wake up. She LOVED him. He made her smile...and he's STILL making us smile. Happy Birthday Andrew Charles... WE LOVE YOU!

Andrew...THRILLED with his new STAR WARS legos!

Pamma, Andrew, PopPop in his new STAR WARS bedroom! Happy Birthday Drew!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Spring...
not sure why, maybe it's ANOTHER season without Melissa...VERY sad lately. Going through pictures , trying to find some of her with Andrew...I just look at the pictures and can't believe she's gone. Just can't be possible.
I KNOW it has to be hard to understand how someone could possibly be in so much pain - even after three years. But there are days when the pain is unbelievable.
Still.
We are so blessed to have friends who accept us for who we are TODAY. Lately I havebeen going to the Compassionate Friends page on Facebook. It is a GODSEND. Helps me, and a lot of bereaved parents, understand that we are truly not alone. We are NOT crazy. If you get a chance, check it out sometime. I have never seen a post from someone who hasn't lost a child, but it really gives you insight into where we are...early in our grief or ten - fifteen years into our grief. It never goes away. We just learn to get through one day at a time, and accept the fact that there will be days that will be hard to get through. Days that we want to turn back the clock and CHANGE what happened. But somehow, we get through those days.
If you get a chance to read some of the posts, it will help you understand what to say, what NOT to say, and why we do what we do. We hold on to every thread to keep our kids with us. But we all understand that we go through this differently, and there is NO right way to grieve and NO timetables.

So another spring is here, and I am missing Melissa terribly...could be Easter too.
I just miss her.

Please don't ever forget her....and when you think of a story or something she said or did that made you laugh...tell us....we LOVE that...

Happy Easter - enjoy your families!
