First, the coronavirus. Over 100,000 people (and counting) have died in the US in just 3 months.
And it's not going away. There is no vaccine and it is very contagious. According to the CDC and epidemiologists, wearing a mask helps to stop the spread. Some, include the president of the US don't believe them.
Early on (January/February), when the virus was spreading in Europe and Asia (started in Wuhan, China) the US was warned that they needed to prepare. Our president was busy having rallies and golfing. He called it a "Democratic hoax" at one of his rallies. It wasn't until the second week of March that he called it an emergency. He closed the border from anyone from China, but people were coming in from other countries. Once it got here, it was spreading fast. Washington state, NY City had the worst cases. As of today, 1.8 M people have been infected in the US. 107,061 deaths. 651,654 have recovered.
Governors in many states had stay at home orders. Ohio was one. March 15, 2020 we were instructed to stay home, to only go out for essential reasons. Grocery stores stayed open, Police, Fire, gas stations and pharmacies all stayed open. No elective surgeries in hospitals. They wanted to save the beds in case they needed them. Most businesses closed. Schools, including colleges and universities closed. All sports, including professional, stopped.
1.1 million people in Ohio are unemployed.
By early May, the protestors were out, urged on by none other than the President of the US.
The economy is on a downward trend. He did not do a good job handling the pandemic. So he wanted the economy to open up. Hundreds of protestors showed up at Capitol Statehouses. Armed.
In fact, in some states, they went INTO courthouses ARMED. Told to go around the metal detectors.
So the country opened up. The plan (presented by the president) was to open up after 14 days of decline in numbers of cases/deaths. The next day, the president urged the country to open up their states.
Some businesses require masks. Some do not. Most businesses require employees to wear masks, but not the public in general.
Fast forward to Monday, May 25, Memorial Day.
If you have never seen (or read) this book, it is about how one action can have a ripple effect and change the course of history.
This event is a perfect example of the Butterfly Effect.
In Minneapolis, police were called about a black man who allegedly tried to use a fake $20 bill.
Police arrived and arrested George Floyd. In the course of the events, he was in the police cruiser, then taken out and put (thrown?) on the ground next to the cruiser. One of the four police officers proceeded to put his knee on his NECK. For 9 minutes. A young 17 year old girl was standing close by and witnessed this happening. She started videoing, and subsequently put it on social media, where it went viral, eventually leading to the firing of all four officers. But NOT the arrest.
What was witnessed by the entire world on that video was a human being taking their last breath.
I have witnessed that three (now four) times in my life. My mom, my dad and and my daughter.
NEVER did I imagine I would witness a complete stranger taking their last breath.
And here we are.
The world changed after that video. Protests in Minneapolis and all over the country. All over the world. Thousands of people supporting the cause. #Black Lives Matter.
Infiltrating the peaceful protests were outsiders taking advantage of the situation. Breaking windows, looting, starting fires (several buildings and businesses destroyed all over the country).
Wrong in so many ways. The brother of George Floyd spoke yesterday at the site of the murder.
He condemned the acts of violence.
Protests in Washington, D.C. at the White House brought the National Guard, who, last night sent TEARGAS into a peacefully protesting crowd, to disperse them so the president could walk across the street to a church for a photo op. Holding a Bible. No speech. Just a photo op.
He has now called in the military. He is calling for war against his OWN citizens.
This is only the beginning of June. The Presidential election is six months away. How much more damage will be inflicted on this country in six months???
One act of rage. An act of MURDER. Brought to life by a 17 year old girl...will change this country forever. The Butterfly Effect. We will decide in November. I hope to God that we make the necessary changes.
This country will not survive four more years of this regime.
